Bruce Smith has literally made my dreams come true. He built the fireplace I had dreamed of for decades, hand-fitting each piece into a beautiful column of stone reaching up to the gabled roof of our guest cottage.
Throughout the process, he welcomed my participation in the design, which made the stunning outcome all the more delightful.
The intelligence and experience he brings to creative problem solving are really remarkable. His willingness to include the homeowner in the process is a great comfort to people like me who are very particular and have given a lot of thought to the design and function they hope to achieve.
Bruce takes it all in stride, adds his own decades of wide ranging experience and masterful craftsmanship with wood, stone and metal, and the result, for my home, has been a true work of art…strikingly beautiful, rugged and refined at the same time, and anchoring the cottage to the site, as if it had grown from the ground up. In fact, Bruce created two works of art for us, because when he finished the larger fireplace, he still had enough patience and good will to build another one at the other end of the building. That space presented its own unique set of constraints and design dilemmas. True to form, Bruce solved all of the problems with brilliance and diligence, creating a small-scale rounded rustic stone fireplace in a corner of the room, which fits in so organically that it creates instant intimacy and charm.
When there are unique challenges in a project and when the highest quality work is desired, Bruce is exactly the right person to call. And the bonus is that he’s a really wonderful person who treats people with respect and kindness. He is a true treasure.
